Dalyan, properly
No high-rises, no marina glitz — a river town where ancient kings, nesting turtles and slow boats set the pace. Here's what we'd show a friend.

01 — The icons
The Rock Tombs of Kaunos
Carved into the cliff around the 4th century BC for the kings of Kaunos, these temple-fronted tombs watch over the river like theatre boxes. They're best at golden hour, from the water, when the limestone turns to honey.
Every river cruise passes directly beneath them — bring a long lens or simply look up and let them be enormous.
See them by boat →02 — The beach
İztuzu Turtle Beach
A 4.5-kilometre ribbon of golden sand with the river on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) have nested here for thousands of years — and thanks to protection since 1988, they still do.
Swim the sea side in the morning, drift to the river side when the breeze picks up. Nesting season (May–September) brings gentle rules after dark; we'll brief you.

03 — The ancient city
Ancient Kaunos
Once a great Carian harbour city, Kaunos traded with the whole Mediterranean until its port silted into today's delta. What remains — theatre, baths, temples, acropolis — sits in fragrant scrub a short row-boat hop from town.
Go early, climb to the theatre's top row, and watch the river wander to the sea below. History rarely comes with views this good.
Add it to your river day →04 — The ritual
Thermal mud baths
Warm mineral mud, a sulphur pool at 39°C, and the universal comedy of watching loved ones turn into statues. The springs at Sultaniye and along the lake have been soothing skin since antiquity.
Wear an old swimsuit, embrace the smell ("character", we call it), and let the mud crack dry before rinsing. Skin like a dolphin, dignity optional.

05 — The quiet lake
Köyceğiz & its villages
Upstream, the river opens into a lake the colour of slate and lavender. Köyceğiz town keeps an unhurried, very Turkish rhythm — best sampled at the Monday market, with a glass of çay and no plans.
Around the shore: sweetgum forests found almost nowhere else on Earth, sleepy fishing villages, and sunsets that empty the tea gardens onto the waterfront.
Spend a market day there →06 — The table
Dalyan town & its flavours
Evenings here mean riverside tables under the tombs: blue crab from the delta, sea bass from the fish cooperative, mezes that keep arriving long after you've said "enough".
Order the crab, take the slow walk along the quay after, and accept that one ice cream is a structural impossibility. Saturday is market day in Ortaca — come hungry.
